brake fluid
i was just curious with all the problems getting parts and the master cylinder rebuilt if it would make any kind of sense to use silicon brake fluid when You redo the brake system. no moisture-no rust? i dont know if there any drawbacks. just thought id throw it out there. i was gonna do it on an old Vette i had. they had a problem with the bores of the calipers pitting out .. . .

Re: brake fluid
hey guys all this talk about masters, why not send it to a company like apple hydraulics , they sleeve the bore and return it rebuilt. Bob on Long Island. P.S. My 600 Coupe is always a big hit at the car shows here.

TWS;
I use DOT5 in my Vette all the time, and Honda 600's too. See the article on the HONDA600OWNERS Yahoo Group site.

brake fluid
I have a brake question in general i have been wondering about. sometimes if you have a collector car they can sit for a long time without being moved, for brakes, moisture can get in the cylinder bores and rust and they can seize. My question is has anyone used silicon brake fluid in thier Hondas? of course You would want it placarded so noone tries to add dot 3 or 5. Was just curious. Thanks Tim

Re: brake fluid
I have used silicone brake fluid in many of my old cars. This is only after a complete brake system overhaul. No ill effects have been found and been doing it for 20 years. It is not hydroscopic and wont suck moisture from the atmosphere like conventional brake fluid.

Re: brake fluid
I fully agree i have used Silicon fluid in all my cars with no problem's and it doesn't melt paint work, dot 5 is silicon dot 5.1 isn't.

Re: brake fluid
many years ago, i had a beautiful 70 corvette and i remember they were really expensive to re-do the calipers/pistons. Ive always wondered with all the pitting problems in brake systems of all cars why they dont all have silicon brake fluid. It seems like a no brainer. but maybe its something about being ecologically friendly or something. Tim

Re: brake fluid
It's because it's not as "cheap" as organic based fluid's and it gives the service schedule an extra "add on" ie profit, silicon fluid is for life the only time it is used in the future is to top up if i have to bleed a system i drain the fluid into a clear container let it "settle" and reuse it!

Re: brake fluid
Just because I don’t drive my collector vehicles as much, I still change out DOT5 every 3 or so years. The pistons are still polishing the interior cylinder walls leaving all that funky sooty stuff in the system. I believe they call it contamination. Changing the fluid and sending to the local recycling is a better idea. What DOT5 does do is allow you to rebuild your brakes and have a good surface to use again in your cylinders. But a well maintained original system (changing that DOT3 or 4) every year will keep it clean. With regular driving DOT3 will absorb H2O to about 50% of the system in two years. So changing it every year will keep everything working right. Just my 2 cents worth.
