misfiring

Post by nicholas_riopelle2001 »

Bill,
I recently did a tune up, points, plugs, oil and filter, etc.
The car runs great, idles like a sewing machine, and the engine is
very quiet, but at a steady speed, with just a little pressure on the
accellerator, I get some misfiring. It stops when I disconnect the
vacume hose to the breaker plate advance. I checked the movement of
the breaker plate with the cover off, and the engine running, and it
moves when I give the car some throttle, like it is supposed to do.
I am at a loss, since the car does not "ping", the plugs have a nice
light brown color, and I am not burning any oil. Any hints? Oh, and
yes, the points are set at the proper .016 inch gap too.

Hi Nicholas;
There are a few things to look at. First I think it is a timing thing
and most likely something that is effected by the timing that is getting
old. Remember that looking at the points breaker plate while it is bolted
to the engine is not going to give you much in knowing if it has slop in it.
Removing it and checking to see if it has up and down motion will give you a
better indication. Also, check out the advancer assembly and see if it is
in good order. Make sure the pin on the end of the cam shaft is in the
groove of the advancer assembly. Also look at the timing chain, see if it
is loose or stretched. If it is an original Honda timing chain, rotate the
crank shaft until it is a TDC then while watching the cam move the timing
mart from T on the case to F. If the cam does not move and you reach F then
you have a cam chain that is stretched to the point where it is causing you
problems. Change out your plugs, they may look like they are running well
but may have a crack. The same with the Coil wires and ends. Original ends
are hard to come by but NGK LBO5F resistor covers are available at any
motor cycle shop.
Just don't give up, keep looking because something is a-miss
