Is my Honda a hemi?

Post by Chuck Dean »

Is my Honda a hemi?
Hi everyone,
Have not had the head off my 600, so I was wondering if the combustion chamber is a hemi? I think I heard that they are, but not sure, and I can't tell by photos of the head.
Thanks,

The sedan shop manual describes the head design.  It is based on a hemispherical design but it doesn't look like the Chrysler hemis of the 50s & 60s.

The N/Z 600 head is not hemispherical. The Honda S600/S800 is.

Strictly speaking, a "hemi" is anything with a dome shaped combustion chamber.  They usually feature valves positioned on opposite sides of the cylinder at an angle to each other.  Basically this allows for a "cross flow" effect with large intake and exhaust ports on opposite sides of the engine...  Yes, can also be true on engines with flat and wedge shaped combustion chambers... but the big benefit of the "hemi" is that it allows for valves with a total diameter larger than that of the cylinder.  It also allows for a more centrally located "firing screw" (spark plug) with better flame travel during the combustion process.  While the S-car engine is closer to the "ideal" description, I consider the N-series engines to be "hemis" too.  Don
