Rear motor mount

Post by dwb_07 »

I have been trying to come up with a substitute rear motor mount and have become a master at removing and replacing the rear mount with out removing the engine. I takes only a few tools, a jack and jack stands and maybe small hands. The only hard part is dropping the (2) 6m bolts that mount the steel mount to the rear case.

I got an NOS mount from Tim Mings.  It's been three or four years, but he may have more.  Seems like it was under $100.

The problem with that is the hardness. It way exceeds the 40 to 50 of the stock rubber band. We have everything to do silicone and urethane, even vacuum chamber. This one is my final result. Its a VW bushing and a custom housing similar to the Z. It is stud down in the car. The VW mount bushing is 2 ribs like the stock mount. The rubber is hard 65 durometer but I have drilled out the ribs to remove stiffness. Some how I am carrying a lot of vibration from the motor into the car body.
