While driving this weekend, I had a bit of an issue with my clutch: I went to push down the clutch pedal and heard and felt a pop. Sounded like a spring breaking. Lost most action in the clutch pedal except for the last inch or so of the pedal, meaning I can engage and disengage the clutch but the pedal has to be almost to the floorboard. I'm still able to shift, barely. In the past, I was able to use most of the action of the pedal in order to use the clutch.
Any ideas on what I should be looking for as I begin this journey?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Seeking insight on clutch issue
It is probably the clutch cable. Some of the inner wire strands may have broken. This is where the long dead spot usually comes from. A pressure plate problem usually produces clutch chatter during engagement. Remove the cable and check the movement of the inner cable...broken wire strands should catch on the outer housing.

Hi Marty,
I have experienced what you are feeling with the clutch cable. In my case, the clutch cable was about to break. The cable is made of a stranded steel cable and when several of the cable strands break, you get the experience you felt. Now the remaining strands will continue to stretch until they break since there are not enough cable strands available to handle the force of depressing the clutch.
The fix is to replace the clutch cable.
good luck,
Dale

Re: Seeking insight on clutch issue
I had the same thing happen while pulling off the lift at a muffler shop. I was sure my clutch was gone. Turns out, the adjustment bolt which had been almost completely backed out from the re-installation of the newly rebuilt engine, just needed to be turned back in. I think there was something in the clutch that wasn't aligned that popped into place, requiring the adjustment bolt to be ran in a considerable amount. It's been working great for over a year.
Re: Seeking insight on clutch issue
I have experienced all of the above, loose adjustment bolt, frayed cable and a broken diaphragm plate. And I was still driving the car until I pulled it apart. The diaphragm plate was accompanied by two of the three clutch torque spring/bolts also being broken.
All of them are simple to replace/fix.
You will have to look closely to find that the torque springs are broken as each one has two spring leafs and maybe only one is broken, it will need to be changed.

Re: Seeking insight on clutch issue
The clutch cable has a step in it and many times due to the length and angle of the cable does not seat into
the housing. The clutch can still be adjusted but when the cable pops into the correct spot the pedal will have
too much free play.
