Charging light help!

Post by MarkS »

Hey guys I need a little help, I had to remove the engine from my car on Saturday to remove 2 sheared bolts from the block where the lower fan shroud attaches to the block. We got the bolts out using an easy out and got the engine put back together and running yesterday. The problem is the Charge light is now on and I can't figure out why. I connected the wires pretty much the only way they could be but after looking at other posts on the forum I'm kinda confused. The posts I read say that there are 4 wires coming out of the generator but mine has 2, a black and a white w/red stripe. The loom from the rectifier has 3 wires, a black a white w/red stripe and a white w/ black stripe that isn't connected to anything. The car ran great with no problems other than a rattley shroud till now. Any help would be great.

The brushes only have 2 wires Black & White with Red stripe.
The Stator windings which pop out the front of the engine 3 Whites and one small White with Black stripe. The 3 whites plug into the rectifier and it doesn't matter which is which.
The wires on the cat body are all inside what looks like a piece of inner tube. Look around

Start first by checking you battery voltage at running(greater then 12v) and not running(12v). It could be the regulator is not switching the idiot light on.
WG goes from "L" on the regulator to the idiot light.
W goes from "A" on the regulator to the center diode on the rectifier.
also to main fuse (45amp)
There are (2) more wires from rectifier to the dynamo.
This makes (5) total wires from the dynamo. A group of (3) at the bottom and a group of (2) side.
BI goes from "E" on the regulator to the dynamo.
W/R goes from "F" on the regulator to the dynamo.
W/BI goes from "N" on the regulator to the dynamo.
BI/y goes from "IG" on the regulator to the ignition switch.

I tried checking them with my multi meter but apperently it decided to give up the ghost so I just used a test light on them and get nothing from the generator at all. When the engine was out I had to repair the white and red wire do to it being frayed so maybe apon doing so I pulled it out of the brush or pullled the brush away from the com. I am going to check it this weekend. Its my daily driver so I gotta just keep the battery charged till the weekend so I can tear into it again. Anything I shouod be looking for from the brushes?

Ok well I pulled the brushes and repaired the black wire right where it comes off the brushes, the housing was split but the wires looked fine so I went ahead and replaced it anyway. Brushes look fine otherwise. Got the brush holder back in the car and tighted up and no change from before. Checked battery voltage with car off and it was 12.8 running it was 12.5 volts. So I pulled the regulator off and cleaned what little crud there was and checked all connections and can't see any problems. So I don't know where to go from here. I found that there is voltage traveling down the white w/red wire that is about a volt less than the battery and the black wire is carrying about .21 - .35 volts when the car is running. I'm stumped!

Are the (4) wires from the rectifier still not connected to anything?
There should be a W/BL wire running from your AC generator to the regulator "N". There should also be (3) more wires running from your AC generator to your rectifier. The fourth wire from the rectifier is the DC output. The brushes wires W/R and BL are are the AC generator input.
The set of (4) large wired come out of the bottom/front of the generator housing near the bottom case.

Mark - once you've tried everything else -- if none of that works -- you might try getting another voltage regulator. I had an issue with my charging circuit a year or two ago and tried several things, none of which fixed the problem -- until I replaced the regulator. Charges fine now.
I'm not suggesting that you buy a regulator if you don't need one, but at some point or another you may need to do that. It's not a bad idea to have a spare regulator, so even if it's not the regulator, you would have a spare for the future. Again, once you've exhausted other possibilities...

Alright!!! Though I feel like a nimrod DWB nailed it, I never saw the 4 wires coming out the bottom of the generator. As soon as I got home and looked at the front of my car I saw it hanging down below the bumper. Apparently when my father in law and I took the engine out he disconnected that harness and I did the 2 coming out of the brushes, so when I put it back in I didn't realize there was a harness on the bottom of the case. So a big thanks to every one who helped out especially to DWB for thinking of the obvious.
Thanks to all my Honda is happy again!
