N600: replacing main engine fuse

Post by Erik »

My main engine fuse behind the battery mounted on the right fender is in poor shape & needs to be replaced.
I believe it's a 45 amp fuse, is that right?
What's the best replacement? Is there such a thing as a 45amp in-line fuse with the two connectors you push into the socket? I don't care about originality, just reliability. Thanks!

One of my sedans did not have a Main fuse in it when I acquired it, so I got creative. I took a main fuse (45amp) from a 89 Accord at a local wrecking yard. I know it looks ghetto but it works just fine with no issued. Check out the "new photos" link. hopefully that helped out a little. I do hope to find the correct fuse someday.

Check out your local NAPA Auto Parts store.  I was in there today and noticed they sold a set of 3 fuses for the Honda.  I did not have a sample of mine but they did look like the same type.  The 3 fuses in the kit were 45, 55, and 65 amps.  The part number was 782-2007 and the price was $ 4.44 (usd).
They also had other options for you.  They had a fuse holder for the blade-style fuses which are found on newer cars and they had a 40 amp blade fuse.  The 40 amp fuse would work if you are not going to be adding lots of accessories (fog lamps,  high powered stereo, high powered horn).
good luck,
Dale

There are two different 45 amp fuses for the Honda 600.  The Sedan fuse is a an inch and a half long.  The Coupe fuse is two and a quarter inches long and is what is still available as they were used  for a number of years.  Caution, the 45, 55 and 65 amp fuses all look the same but are stamped with different numbers the 45 amp fuse is the correct one.

Be sure to check the spade connectors on the fuse block.  The (female spade) insulating plastic can shrink with age.  I was driving the freeway, and had an electrical fire.  The fuse block had slipped off the Z bracket, and made contact to the now exposed connector.  So, be sure holding bracket is tight and use shrink tubing or electrical tape around both connectors on the block.
This stopped my driving that day, and being hundreds of miles from home, took a U-Haul truck and tow dolly to get back.  A very bad day.  Repairs included the engine wiring harness that was destroyed by the dripping fire.

I always cary pieces of solder in my glove box in all my cars. You can make temporary fuses from the solder to get you home or safely off the highway to a garage. I was lazy when I was a teenager and used thin slder for the main fuse on my honda for a long time. It would melt about once a month and I would just put a new piece in - dumb but I was 16.....

remember there is a reason why a fuse blows and if you use  solder or tin to fix it you may just burn all your wiring up and your car when you put it in the fuse holder.  I carry extra fuses all the time,  mostly in the honda. lol
