I need Piston rings.

Post by bluegrassaviator »

I have oversized pistons and need rings. The pistons are in good shape and spec out within limits. They have 100 printed on them. The original rings have R 100 on them. I know that Hastings has rings but I don't think they have the 100's. Anybody have new rings or know where I can get rings to fit my original honda pistons?

Hi Aaron, need more information.
These pistons are used?
Has or was your block already bored/honed to fit the 100 OS piston?
What was the compression before taking the motor apart.
Parts are hard to find so you might want to scuff the bore and see if the old cast iron rings will re-seat. Cheap way out.
Or Contact:

Hastings show stock rings, but doesn't list O/S rings.

It's 1.00mm oversize which is the max offered by Honda the factory. There is a Civic model that also has 74mm pistons and in the engine I am building for a friend in Los Angeles I put them in. The catch is you have to get the oil groove widened to 3.0mm. Any machine shop can do that. Or just use the 2 new top rings and reuse your old oil ring if you have them.

Thanks for the help. I was able to order the rings straight from hastings. They sell a +10 and +20 size. The price is $58 per set.

I thought you needed 1mm oversize pistons (approx +40)?   How will you be able to use rings from Hastings?
Here is some info for the others reading this post;
I contacted Hastings and they sell a set of rings for 2 cylinders (4 compression and 2 oil rings) for $81.04 plus $7.50 shipping.  The price may be lower if you do a lot of business with them.  The part number for the Honda 600 ring set (everything for both cylinders) is 2C9500 . They are available in STD, +10, and +20 sizes.
The +30 and +40 oversizes are NOT available from Hastings.
If your cylinder is already at 1mm oversize (which is approx +40),  you may be able to resleeve the cylinders.  When I had my cylinder liners replaced,  I would start back at the standard bore size.

Hi Dale, thanks for the info.
So rings are available in .010" & .020" OS.
And 1mm OS Honda Civic rings will work, when the piston oil groove is modified.
Are pistons available?
I will be dropping my engine today after work.
The engine was running good, just a few oil leaks.
So will be replacing gaskets and checking everything before install.
If gaskets are available!?

Hi Lyle,
Piston and rings do seem to be available.  Check the postings on this group for suggestions.  I believe Connor's shop in North Carolina sells piston/ring kits and gaskets.
Since you have indicated the engine is working well with the exception of a few oil leaks,  why are you wanting to replace the pistons and rings?  If you take it apart,  you will be able to see what needs replacing.  If you start looking too close, you may find lots of things needing replacement.
good luck,
Dale

Hi Dale, just seeing what is available.
We need to come up with a list of approved suppliers and what they carry. Big auto suppliers don't carry much of anything for these cars!
The only reason I am dropping the motor is to fix rust around the inner fenders and the air box area. The car has very little rust.
I also want to paint the engine compartment. I have pulled the valance, front fenders, doors, rear hatch, gas tank, brake system, all trim and interior stuff.
I guess I am doing a frame off restoration, if it had a frame.
I also am building a car rotisserie, so I can work on the bottom of the car.
