Insurance
Hi everyone. I have a 72 N600 and my insurance is about $450/yr. I have tried to get Grundy and Hagerty but I don't have a locked garage (it's kept in an enclosed cover-all vinyl "shed") and I want to be able to run errands with the car. So I don't qualify for coverage with those two. I believe I've tried others as well. Does anyone have a company that does not require a locked garage and that will allow you to use the car for errands (not just parades, shows, etc...)?
I'm frustrated at spending so much money on this.
Thanks!
Doug

Doug, I have the same car insured with State Farm for under $165 for six months with no garage restrictions. But we have it with a multi car and safe driving options and can drive no more than 7000 miles per year. Also, mine is not a show car by any stretch. Just thought I'd let you know. Re: Insurance
State Farm. Just paid mine fifteen minutes ago. But as a collector car valued at $8,000.
$65.38 for six months. 1972 sedan all original with 8,500 miles on it.
Class 1S Limited use antique/classic. I drive that car about 100 miles a year, in only the best of weather.
I'll be licensing a frequent driver with non-expiring collector plates, a 1970 sedan, when the weather warms up. State Farm will insure it, too. Guess I'm partial to State Farm, having been a client since Jan. 1973, including an N600 in about 1973-74.

I use Hagerty. Price will depend on what value you place on it.

Re: Insurance
I have used State Farm since I was 17 (33 years). I've never wrecked a car nor filed a large claim except for a windshield on my Geo Metro and when my Honda 600 sedan rolled away and hit my neighbors truck. Didn't damage my 600 and all and totalled the side of his truck !
I carried classic vehicle insurance on a few cars and 1 scooter. They have driving restrictions on that type. I currently have Comp only on my s500 which is not operable and is underinsured unless I get an appraisal.

Re: Insurance
Like Miles, I have been with State Farm for many years, nonstop since 1973.
Countless vehicles and a number of them in the collector group. But they also have agreed value, which I prefer to regular not appraised insurance.
Appraised value insurance has it's merits. I had a Collector car that I rolled, it had appraised value insurance and I disputed the first offer by the claims adjuster. State Farm called in their appraiser and the car was valued 50% more than the amount I had it appraised/insured for and "within the period of the last policy payment". State Farm approved their appraised value and the car was repaired.
I try to do two things with insurance, first is to cover what ever damage my vehicle can do to another in whatever mishap. Second is to keep it from being totaled unless it really is (totaled).
And, include the cheap stuff like Uninsured drivers, Rental and Medical (if your state doesn't already require it). You might say Medical is not cheap, well it may not look that way when it is coming out of your pocket.
One more thing, go to your insurance company regardless of who is at fault, you paid them and your agent is on your side. For sure the other guys isn't. Carry a camera, and take pictures to include the other guy, his car showing his license plate. Also, carry a fire extinguisher, your driving a 30+ year old car that you may drive on rare occasions after sitting for weeks at a time. Stuff grows old just sitting and regardless of what it looks like we all know it's old. It's really great to hear or see the totally original car at the show, built in the 60's and still has the original tires. It was most likely used a trailer to the event and in some cases the tires were put back on the car when it got there and not driven that way.
On the side of the insurance company; they have to prove to the other guys company that their claim is valid. And, regardless of which child was born in the car or you used it on your first date, it has only so much value. So, read the appraisal guides, have your freshly restored car appraised, take lots of pictures and save your receipts. Win trophies at local car shows, it says some one else sees value in your car. The worst thing you can say "well I was offered ....$$.. for my car just a week ago". If you can't back up what you are telling your agent, it aint worth squat.

Re: Insurance
Thanks everyone on the insurance stuff. I have used State Farm too for a long time and just wanted some ideas. Thanks for that. i went in today and talked to my agent and looks like the next time it is nice i am going to take it in so they can take pics of the car and then figure which way i want to go.. right now i have is insured as a regular car with low mileage per year. i think it is 168 a year but not sure right now. I am going to the Micro/Mini show in Hillboro Ore. this year and maybe there will be appraiser there. There is not any in our area.
