I would like to know more about the optical ignition and its cost,
normal instilation time.
Optical ignition

With this you can use just about any electronic control box. (Dr.
Jacob's book on Electronic Ignition is the best for wiring, but the
Crane part comes with some example schematics.) We used an MSD box,
maybe overkill. The 6A box is like $185 at Summit - again OVERKILL,
but can be found at

You then have to modify 3 parts to make it work:
1) The Points Compartment Lid to have a bubble built up to make room
for the trigger. This was really a function of how high we mounted
the trigger. Might not be needed if you can mount the sensor lower.
Cover has to be on for trigger to work, at least with the hood up
during the day.
2) The Point Assembly has to be taken apart. You just use the bottom
plate that is secured with two screws inside the Cam Holder. This has
to be modified with a tab welded on to hold the Optical Trigger.
3) The Advancer Assembly is disassembled - remove the advance parts
and spring. Then weld a large washer on top with two pins (we used
screws) for trigger.
The trigger was made of plexiglass (or some other material) painted
black with 2 slots cut 180 degrees apart.
We spent at least an hour on fabrication, and my Dad's pretty good in
the shop. Some of that time was just looking for the right washer.
If you are working in a small garage, don't be ashamed if it's a full
day project.
Wiring was pretty simple - a few between the MSD and trigger, a
ground, a 12V source (ignition based), etc.. But this was probably
another 45 to 60 minutes taking it slow.
We lined it up to fire on TDC, then adjusted it with a timing light.
(Start the car, see where it was, turn off car, adjust, repeat.) Was
one of those things we built at home and didn't have time to install
until we were on the salt. Fired right up, wound as high as she'd go
. . .
BTW - you aren't with Sylvester, are you?
