loud, new muffler

Post by mterrens »

I recently replaced my rusty old muffler with a brand new one from Mike O'Connor.  It looks terrific, however I am finding that I need to come up with an additional "silencer gasket" to seal the connection between the muffler and the exhaust pipe in front of it.  There is quite a bit of exhaust leaking at that point and more noise and vibration than there ought to be.  Here is what is looks like...

I have used the paper-thin metal bell-shaped washer that was there originally; however I assume it is not mating as well with the new muffler.  I guess I need a gasket, or material, or filler, of some sort.  Can someone point me in the right direction here?
Thanks!
By the way, the joint in question is set up differently than the way the Coupe and Sedan manuals show it - instead of the main exhaust pipe ending in an integrated flange with bolt holes through it to mount to the muffler, mine ends in a flared-out bell shape, and there is a separate bracket that pulls it tight agsinst the muffler.   Don't know how original that is...
Thanks,
Steve
