fuel pump/hose leak
fuel pump/hose leak
Hi all,
After struggling for weeks to keep my fuel system free of gum and
blockages, I now have sprung a leak under the fuel pump. I assume it
is due to the short hose that is forced to bend sharply before
plugging into the inlet of the pump. I have tightened the hose clamps
as tight as is reasonable. The hoses appear to be the right size.
The originals somehow (apparently) didn't need hose clamps on all four
junctions. Does the pump itself ever leak? Is there a better way to
route/attach these hoses?
TIA,
Jon

Re: fuel pump/hose leak
Hi Jon;
You most likely cracked the plastic part of the fuel pump at the bottom.
And a note for all sedan owners. The approved way to change the fuel filter
is to remove the pump with the filter attached, and then reinstall it that
way. It involves two bolts and unplugging the pump and pulling two hoses.
But it is easier and you won't crack or brake off the plastic parts at the
bottom of the pump.

Re: fuel pump/hose leak
Right you are, unfortunately. I read the warnings and was careful when I
first removed it, but I guess I cracked it during one of the subsequent
removals/installations. I had to muscle the hoses onto the fittings each
time; I suppose a smarter mechanic would have used a drop of oil to make
them slide on easier (I just figured this out tonight, a little too late
though). I carefully pulled the pump out of my parts car to find that it is
cracked as well. I assume there is no way to fix these cracks, so I will
need another pump, right?
Thanks again for your help.

Re: fuel pump/hose leak
Can the end cap be taken off the pump without small parts going flying? If
so, I may just try to seal the cracks with something like Permatex Radiator
and Fuel Tank Repair.

Re: fuel pump/hose leak
JB Weld is the best thing to attempt the repair with...USE IT
SPARINGLY...Give it 12 to 16 hours to cure before returning the pump to
service...ALSO, make sure the surface to be repaired is CLEAN...

Re: fuel pump/hose leak
Yes, and you can replace the bottom alone. No nothing will come flying out
at you.
Bill
at you.

Bill,
Isn't there a replacement fuel pump that can be used as well?

Re: fuel pump/hose leak
If you take the bottom off the pump and dry it off real well, you
could possibly melt a crack shut with a soldering gun or pencil tip
soldering iron. I have had lots of luck plastic welding parts on
Honda 600 and motorcycles with my Weller gun.

I did the samething to pump. Advance auto parts or
parts america have the replace to 45 dollars. not
exact fit but a good replacement. Here's a link to the

Hi Jon;
I may have an extra bottom cap, is this where it cracked? or was it the
next section up?
