A friend just checked out my new n600 for me... his report

Post by Fred »

I'll be getting the pictures tonight that he took, but until then I'm
going on what he told me.
He managed to get spark to the car and the starter turned over. He
coudl not, however, get it started. He is guessing the carb is in
need of a rebuild. Does this sound right? Is rebuilding a carb
something I can do (my only experience is with fuel injected cars) or
should i have someone else do it? Is there a better carb to put on
the car instead of rebuilding it that i can get on ebay?
He said there was no pressure on the break pedal, which he said was
probably due to the lines rusting out. will this be fixed by
replacing the brake lines and bleeding the brake system? I'm thinking
this may require an entire brake system rebuild, which isn't bad, it's
just annoying.
needs new carpet - no shocker there. I know there are after market
carpets available. Who can suggest a place?
I guess I'll wait for pictures to get the rest of the info. I'm
hoping to get the movers there next week to get the car on the road.
It looks like the rear right wheel is locked so I'm going to need to
get that unstuck. My friend couldn't get to that as it was raining in
chicago off and on today.
Anyway, this is more of an update than anything else. Any help you
guys can offer will be awesome.
I will get the VIN tonight so I can register on the 600 registry.
hopefully there are some donor cars in my area.

Did he check and see if the gas pump is working? one
easy way to do this to spray some starting fluid
inside the carburator and crank it over and it should
turn over and start and turn off. I recent bough a car
the same problem and i use a starting fluid and it
start up with no problem. Good luch!

He said he tested the fuel pump and also used starting fluid with no
luck. He was also short on time so he couldn't try too many more
things. The carb could just need to be cleaned too. The car hasn't
been started in 4 years.

my new n600 . his report ---- advisory

Post by Steve »

Before cranking a car with an unknown condition, I would recommend
to remove the spark plugs and rotate the engine forward several
revolutions using a 17mm wrench. If the valve timing is off you will
immediately bend all your valves just by cranking it. Since it has
been sitting for 4 years also there is no oil in the upper end of
the engine. The cam chain tensioner partially relies on oil for it's
tensioner to work. The compression will be less also as there is no
oil on the cylinder walls.
If while rotating the engine with a wrench it comes up on a
resistance, stop and check the mechanical timing.
The brakes won't fix themselves by just bleeding the system. Plan on
removing and sleeving the rear wheel cylinders and master cylinder,
they are made of aluminum and corrode easily. I rebuild brake
systems on a regular basis and can tell you that the brake booster
is the biggest problem to rebuild as it is complex and there are no
parts for it. I have several orders for boosters which I cannot fill
as I am out of seals. If you can get ahold of a brake booster piston
set, I could do a booster for you. The set consists of 2 pistons and
3 seals + 2 orings. You may also need new hoses, the steel lines
don't rust out (not in Calif anyway).
Mike O'Connor sells a nice carpet set, they are 5 piece front
instead of 3 pc original, it also includes the rear piece. It is
also easy to have new carpets made and have an upholstery shop bind
them for you.
