Hi all,
I am getting ready to pursue a build up of my 1972 Z coupe and I have
a thought / question for the gurus in the group.
Is it possible to upgrade the engine either with a whole new larger
motorcycle engine (i.e. early to mid 80's air cooled goldwing motor),
or perhaps to replace the whole upper end and lower end innards with
parts from a honda 750 - 1000 gold wing?
I have about 85% of an engine as best as I can determine. and since I
am working on a budget I was just curious if any one has researched
this aspect.
Also, has anyone changed out the mechanical fan in lieu of a small
electric one so as to gain some horses? Looks like that would be
easily accomplished.
Another question - Has anyone used a 13" wheel with low profile
tires on their AN or AZ?
I have the number to a guy in N.Carolina and he offered that as a
responce to my tire / wheel problem. He swore he had some 4 X 110mm
wheels in 13" size. Is 4X110mm the right lug pattern?
Take care and thanks for any and all info.
KC and the Z.

Question about transmission and engine swap
Re: Question about transmission and engine swap
I once replaced my mechanical fan with an electric one . The
problem I had was the space behind the motor is odd shaped and small .
I opted to cut out the bearing casting on my original fan housing,
then put a small eletric fan motor out of a late model honda in the
center. I used small bolts through the motor flang into the existing
housing. I used the original fan. I had to modify the center to take
the motor shaft but it worked great. The fan stuck out slightly from
the shroud so I didn't put the deflector tin back on. It worked well
untill the used motors' bearings gave out. After that I took the fan
shroud off and only ran the car ounce in a while for fear of over
heating.
Never swapped motors though.... Thought about it :)

Re: Question about transmission and engine swap
The big problem with motorcycle engine swaps is getting a reverse gear. If you think about it the car is pretty impressive for it's day - already getting 1HP/CID. They are fun little cars . . . but then I'm preaching to the choir, aren't I? ;-)
We run an electric fan in our Bonneville car. Appears to work fine when I run it on the street around home. I'd really suggest putting in a head temp gauge, run it with the stock fan and get a baseline - then swap. Engines aren't that hard to find, since the cars tend to rust out. You might find buying a motor/transmission from someone to be much cheaper than trying to modify your existing parts. AFAIK there are no real direct parts that swap like you can do with a Ford/Chevy, etc..
And yes - 4x110 is the correct bolt pattern, and Mazda 13" rims (some rare older vintages of the 626, can look them up for you if you need) work with low profile tires. You'll want to replace the lugs and put bigger lug nuts to be safe. And ther was a lot of discussion earlier about them causing the bearings to wear out sooner.
If the guy in North Carolina is Mike O'Connor he's a good guy to deal with. To save shipping (sorry Mike!) you might hit the junk yards yourself, but be careful there are some wheels that are like 4x115 (really 4x something in inches - but they look real close.)
