I am puling the engine on my coupe. I am a bit puzzled as to the proper tool to use to bang out the "roll pin" that couples the tranny to the shifter. It appears to be a metal tube, as opposed to a solid "pin". Should I be using a solid metal bar to bang it out with? Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Steve
removing the shifter from the transmission
Re: removing the shifter from the transmission
Use a bolt, or metal rod. Don't use anything tapered as this will go inside the pin and spread it, making it harder to remove. Or you can use a punch and tap on the edges of the roll pin only.

Re: replacing the shifter from the transmission
Replacing the pin is a bit of a trick also. Since the pin springs
open once removed and it is dark down there and aligning the shaft &
shifter is a drag in the dark, I use an 8mm bolt 12mm long to line up
the holes then slightly compress the dowell pin with visegrips into
the hole and press into place with channel lock pliers, remove bolt
and use pliers to finish driving it in. Hammering on the shift shaft
doesn't normally damage the shaft or cases, but is not nice anyways.
