Thanks to all who responded to my ignition coil questions.
Turns out the Harley dual coil (5 ohm for points) works well and looks good. For less than $40 Thunderbolt makes a chrome coil with yellow solid core wires that is available from all the Harley aftermarket dealers.
So as I attempt to drive the newly well running car out of it’s space, I shift into reverse, give it some gas, and let out the clutch. The car starts powering backwards but feels like the e-brake is on.
Check e-brake, it’s not on. Maybe the brakes are rusted solid? Spin all 4 wheels, they all spin, brakes not frozen. Get back in car, shift into 1 st , gently let out clutch, car starts forward.
Shift into reverse, it’s like back bumper is against a tree or something. Dip into throttle, chassis torques but doesn’t move, feels like trans brake in drag car, and it pops itself out of gear with a loud noise.
Now the 1-2 shift is gone, 3-4 still works, R seems to work. Something very wrong here.
Put front end up on jack stands, fire the engine, shift, release clutch, forward gears spin wheels off ground forward, reverse spins wheels off ground backwards. It just doesn’t work under load. Then the owner tells me since the car has been down (since 1986…) he’s replaced the clutch and torn the tranny apart a couple times. Had
no idea what he was doing but was in possession of factory manual. He described the process of aligning the shift forks while attaching lower case to upper engine assy but he didn’t know what the shift forks were or what they did. Apparently his first reassemble wouldn’t shift at all, so he unbolted it and tried again. Now the symptoms I related above. Obviously, the gear box has to come apart and be reassembled correctly. It really feels like the clutch is engaging and disengaging normally.
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions. Thx. Ric.

Re: transmission locked up
Hi Ric;
Can you give us the engine number off the engine case, not the plate in the engine compartment?
In the mean time, check the nuts on the axels, I had a owner bring his car in one time and he had put the axel nut on hand tight and then backed it off a 1/4 turn (like a Chevy) needless to say, the splines on the axel melted away as he stripped everything front he axel to the hubs. Both hubs and axels needed to be changed out.
