Is that because most of the cars out there are of the smaller variety?
Isn't it mostly the US that runs around in big cars?

In the UK here we can get 165/70 10 and 145/80 10 tyres "off the shelf" its the spare parts we find hard to get!

Tire heat is important. Our Honda 600's use 145/80R-10 tires.
I love math and racing, so think of this....
The formula is: section width X Aspect ratio X 2 divided by 25.4 + rim Diameter = tire Diameter.
So 145 X .8 = 116 x 2 = 232 divided by 25.4 = 9.13 + 10 = 19.13" tire diameter.
Now take 19.13" dia X 3.14159 = 60.1" tire circumference. About 5ft distance traveled per revolution. 5280ft in a mile divided by 5ft = 1056. So the Honda tires are rotating at 1056rpm's at 60mph! That is about twice as fast as my F150 tires are rotating. But the Honda tire only carries about 400 pounds per tire.
So weight, rpm, G-load....
I still think we are way below what these tires can handle.
I think any DOT approved tire will be fine.

There is available DOT approved golf cart tires nowadays and of course non DOT tires. Someone is going to jump in here and say non DOT tires will kill you and everyone on the hi-way but that is pure bullshit. Some non dot tires are racing tires rated for hi-speed. OH by the way, some will also say if you are in a wreck the LEOS will check your tires for the stamp, more bullshit.> �
