Re: Rear shocks
Hi Riceburner;
The VW shock does work, but as you said, it is not a full swap. You must
grind down the lower end (make it as wide as the Honda shock) then flatten
the seam that hits the shock where the body is spot welded together. Then
they work just fine and if your front struts are getting a bit loose due to
age, the VW shock will correct most of the body roll.

Re: Rear shocks
Hi riceburner006;
No, I have not filled any of the struts or shocks. And, your right on
the shocks being not as good as stock Honda, but when nothing else is
available, we use what we can. I talked to Koni on rebuilding a set of
their struts, cost with shipping was $125.00 each. But they would be like
new. I may think about it some time, I have a complete set for a Coupe,
but they need rebuilding.

Rear shocks
I know this has been covered, but I thought I'd ask for a little more information.
My z600 needs new rear shocks. I was thinking of putting the shocks from the n600 into the z600 and getting new shocks for the n600. Odds are I'll be driving the n600 more, so I'd rather have the new shocks on the n600.
So, I know that I can get front shocks from a 69-71 VW and they'll fit with a little modification. I've also read that I can get Datsun 520 shocks and they'll fit, although I'm having a difficult time finding them. I've seen a few people have Koni shocks on their n600, although I don't know the model, information, etc.
This is a link to tirerack's shocks for a 1970 Beetle. Can anyone tell me if they will work?
http://www.tirerack.com/suspension/Susp ... fcat=track
Can anyone give a link as to where I can obtain new shocks that will work? Has there been a writeup on replacing them?

Re: Rear shocks
I ended up with the VW shocks on back of my n600. It wasn't a plug n
play operation, but I don't remember it being horrendously bad either.
The shocks I ended up with are made by Boge, and they are the softest
shocks I could find. Most of the aftermarket shocks have way too much
dampening for the light weight of a n600 rear end and result in an
overly stiff ride.
If you can't find them mail order, go to you local VW shop... they'll
most likely have them in stock.

Re: Rear shocks
If you go to the tuner shops the 66 - 69 maybe 72 DATSUN small pickup has
had a lot of after market shocks. The front shocks will bolt in (but you
have to remove the cross plate with bolt holes. The VW shocks have to be
ground down on both sides of the lower mount and you have to flatten the
body seam about 2.5 inches. Stiff, yep. loose teeth will fall out, but
after a month or so you will enjoy the better truning (less body roll)
capablility it gives.

Re: Rear shocks
The first set of rear shocks that I bought were KYB GR2's (from tire
rack)... very stiff. When I replaced the KYB's with the new softer
Boge's, I also built up new spring packs, adding a coupe's leafs to my
sedan's leafs. The combination of maybe twice the spring rate and the
softer shocks yeilded a better ride and more roll stiffness than my
original KYB setup.
One hazard though... when increasing rear roll stiffness, be sure to
stiffen up the front end as well, or you end up with oversteer when
you loose traction. Not the safest thing for a street car.

Rear shocks
Hey guys, Dale was who told me about the NAPA shocks. Indeed they do
fit.
Hope to tell you later, may be next year, how the ride is. They are gas
shocks
BTW Still need a Solenoid for Carb. Anyone if you have one for sale
send me total shipped price and your mailing address and I'll get a postal
money order in the mail. Dale thanks for the shock tip and all the rest.
