Running, but a lot of work to do.

Post by cotton »

Well I finally got my N600 running. The last time it ran was the
late 70's according to Missouri license sticker in the windshield. I
bought it as a non-running project that looked good as it has been
inside all this time. Here are the problems to correct of my own
doing....
1. Oil leak below the carb on the rear of the engine somewhere.
Leaks bad, so should be easy to find. It isn't the cam chain
tensioner as I looked there.
2. Rear wheel cylinder leaking. Not sure what happened there as I
was into that too.
3. The worst part. NO REVERSE. It tries to go in, but only grinds
and that is after the shifter is rolled way over. I will pull the
side plate off of the trans, but may have to pull the motor back
out! I am not excited about that. At least I was able to drive it
around the pasture a bit.

Hi Kevin;
what type of pin did you use to attach the shift lever to the shift
shaft?

I was afraid someone was going to ask that question. It originally
had a roll pin. I tried to install it, but it went flying across the
shop somewhere and I couldn't find it. I then put a bolt with nut in
there and locktited it. I suppose this was the wrong thing to do?
It did seem to shift fine on the bench.....

Hi Kevin;
What happens is that the bolt keeps it from going in far enough to go
into reverse. Yea know, like not getting it in far enough to make a
difference....
The split pin leaves nothing on the outside of the shaft universal joint.
It moves freely into the keeper for the shift shaft seal. The reverse gear
and leaver are most likely fine.

Does the oil actually slowly stream out? Some of the really early honda engines needed O-rings inbetween the case and the cylinders. If those went away then oil builds up inside the channels for the long bolts that hold the head on. Eventually it gets to where the fins are open and kind of "drools" out.
If this is it it is a pain to fix. Almost better off putting in a different set of cylinders. (But if you want the o-rings I have a bag, happy to send you a set for just a SASE.)
BTW - I took pictures of the differences in the cylinders for the O-rings. Should I post them in the Photos section?

Thanks Bill. I was afraid of that problem. I will get what is
supposed to be in there and try again. The shifter to me feels a bit
sloppy. Maybe that is just the nature of the beast. I did get to
run the car about 20 miles now. There are several little things
needing fixed, so it is going to keep me busy for a while yet.
Thanks again.
