crud in the air filter box

Post by mterrens »

I opened up the air filter box to check the filter for the first time today - the filter looked fine, but there was a 1/8" layer of black crud at the bottom of the air filter box.  It's oil (?), I suppose, but how did it find it's way in there?  I cleaned it out of course.

Hi Steve;
    If it is dry then not much to worry about.  If it's wet, but not much of it, then this is normal.  There is a small drain plug under the inlet for the hose from the engines breather.   But what you brought up is a serious problem which is normally caused by significant scoring of the pistons or broken rings allowing blow-by which causes oil from the crankcase to pass through the breather and into the air box.  All engines have this, normally there is a PCV valve in place to keep the flow going in one direction.  What your seeing is most likely a past event which has been corrected.   In warmer climates we run 20w50 all the time which helps keep things running well and helps stop blow-by.

Oil crud is blowby from the engine breather, it is supposed to
collect in the side of the filter housing. See the info in your
owners manual. You can avoid this by running a long tube from the top
of engine down the firewall to near the ground. This is the only smog
device on the N/Z 600 and will not affect the running, saves air
filters. Or, just don't look under the filter.
