1971 z600 AUTOMATIC??????????????
Hello, My membership officially begins today. I saw my first 600
at a local flea market in San Jose, CA. WOW, the looks that guy was
getting. We were all over him. I had driven there in my '56
Eldorado, yet I was jealous of all the attention HE was getting.
Question for everyone!! Was there an automatic ever made in '71. My
sister wants one but will not drive a stick. If anyone knows of a
super clean automatic for sale, just let me know. She wants the
sporty looking coupe and NOT the sedan. Thanks, Mathew.

Mathew,
I am sure that more knowledgeable members will chime in, but I believe that
an automatic trans for the Coupe either never existed, or at best is
extraordinarily rare. The sedan could be had with an automatic however,
though that too is a rare thing.
Here are a few webpages (some created by members) that help detail your
options...but don't really answer your question.

Re: 1971 z600 AUTOMATIC??????????????
Mathew,
Here is a web page that (in Japanese) claims to describe a Z (Coupe)
automatic.
http://www.honda.co.jp/soeno/photo_id/z/n_p70.html
You can try www.babelfish.altavista.com to translate, but I did not have
much luck...
Attached is a Japanese ad for an automatic coupe - this doesn't mean that
the model ever made it to the US though.

z600 AUTOMATIC??????????????
Thanks, Steve. In 2 hours of GOOGLE searches, I never did find those links!! Boy, an automatic! Neat. I wonder if people can drive a JAPANESE honda in the U.S.? With the steering wheel on the wrong side and all? or one of those 1966 Honda Convertibles? or maybe it has more to do with emmisions?
Mathew.

I believe Honda imported a very few automatic sedans, but a few more may have found there way to the U.S. I don't think any coupes were ever imported.

Re: 1971 z600 AUTOMATIC?????????????? Yes & No
I had a 1973 Z360 Life with 3 speed fully auto trans. It was slower
than watching yer finger nails grow. Someone imported it from Japan
in 1975 and did all the necessary changes to be able to drive it here
in the USA.
The car was RHD, silver paint, liquid cooled 2 cylinder motor with a
normal downdraft carb just like a real car. 3 speed fully automatic
trans mounted on the side of the engine just like a real car, like a
Civic. I sold it some years later for I think $3000 and it is still
in the USA belonging to a private collector.
As far as a AZ 600 with auto? I never heard of one, but I guess you
could drop in a powerplant from the AN 600 that wasn't sold here much
either or at all into the coupe. How's about just getting her a Civic
1200 with the 2 speed auto? They suck just as bad as a Geo Metro with
an auto.

66 convert
I had a '66 convertible # ASXXX-XXX-XXXX, ya know... there were only
110 made that year?! I always thought it was cool my serial # being
the same as the type. It was my first S600.
RHD has nothing to do with being *legal to drive* in the USA. Also
trying to run emmissions on a car with 4 carbs & 2 tail pipes usually
makes for a headache. The cars are exempt in Cali anyway because of
engine size and now because of year of manuafacture. I had several S
cars with RHD, lots of fun those.

Re: z600 AUTOMATIC??????????????
Hi Marty;
The Hondamatic 600 had two versions, the first one 5000001 through 5000700 had a really tough double wire shifting set up which would make it costly to adapt. Other issues would be the brake peddle placement. The one I have originally had engine number 500035. The engine in it when I found it had number 5000491. The engine mounts are different, shifting is different and there is a cable that came from the Carb town to the transmission which governed the speed through shifts. Exhaust is different. Other than that it would be a snap. There is a Hondamatic 600 in New Zealand for sale, and I have listed two in England, two in the Netherlands, one in Holland. The real issue is as Miles has already said, they have to start moving long before the light turns green or they would never make it across the road. Engine parts are another problem as well as some of the interior parts. Some of the Emblems have still not been located.
