Shop Manuals

Post by mterrens »

I have been pondering buying a shop manual for the 600 Coupe, and until a
few moments ago figured that my only option was eBay. This morning I had
the bright idea of actually calling my local Honda dealer and asking them
(!) what was available.
They gave me the number of a publisher, at XXX-XXX-XXXX, who "deals with the
shop manuals". The publisher tells me that YES, they can sell me a "print
on demand", fresh copy of the shop manual for the Z360/600 for $50. It is
their item # 616231. They also sell the owners manual for $24. They tell
me it takes four weeks to print and ship.
I don't have any idea as to the reliability or authenticity of all this, but
it sounds great. Anyone have any experience with these folks?

Hmm... You didn't mention who these folks were, but by the manual #
I'm guessing you mean Helms. http://www.helminc.com
These guys have been printing Honda and Acura manuals for years.
Which reminds me that I should order some more manuals from them for
my acura.

Helms - yeah, that's the name - I didn't write it down when it was
mentioned, so I wasn't sure.
Do their manuals look like the originals? I am told they are "print on
demand" books; does this mean they are plain white paper in a binder, or
something different?
In any event, I bought a 30 year old copy of the shop manual on eBay
today...I didn't want to wait the four weeks. Cost about the same as a
reprint.

Hi Steven;
Yes, your most likely speaking of Helm Publications. The Z360/600
manual is really a supplement manual to the Sedan 360/400/600 manual, which
gives all the early sedan items and much further brake down of larger parts.
And both will be needed if you are working on a April 1971 Sedan or later.
The Owners manual is ok, but it does not include the original plastic cover
or the maintenance manual unless it is updated since I last spoke with them.
Original Sedan shop manuals (or Big Blue) as they are more commonly known.
Are available in fair to Good condition for about the same amount. The
original manual's paper is better and they come with a loose-leaf locking
binder.
