Z600 Fuel Pump

Post by Troy »

My friend just bought a 600Z Coupe. We can start it with either but
the fuel pump is frozen, and it will not run on its own as the carb
is not getting any fuel. Did any of the other Honda's use this pump?
Does anyone out there have a good used one or new one for sale? Any
help will be appreciated. Ray Morey Dallas, Texas

If you remove the plastic top of pump, you will see a set of
contact points, and if badly corroded the pump won't run. Very
carefully "dress-up" the points with a fine piece of sand paper. The
points are v.soft,so don't use a file. I think these points are like
silver plated, unlike ignition points which are tungsten and are
v.hard. I thought you could try this first, because it worked for me
once, and I never had to replace one of these pumps. Riceburner.

Hi Ray;
It sounds like you are having some problems with your new Honda 600 Z
Coupe. The fuel pump can go out, and there are some things you can do to
make it go again. purchasing a new pump is most likely the best bet. But
there are some things you should look at first. And, I have to ask some
questions.
1. Does the pump run if you pull it and touch the leads to the Positive
and Negative poles of the battery? The Black lead is negative.
2. If it vibrates then turn it over and look at the plastic base and
inspect it for cracks, some times the ears on the mount to the fuel pump on
the Coupe get pushed down when to much torque is used to tighten the bolts.
Then the bottom of the pump hits the pan and cracks it. This can result in
lost fuel and start a fire. If there are no cracks, place some hose on the
pump and dip the inlet side into a jar of gas and start your pump again off
the battery, this time use some jumper wires to keep the fuel away from any
sparks which may occur when touching the poles.
3. If it pumps, then the problem is else where, most likely the tank or
fuel lines to the carb.
4. If it does not pump, then opening the pump and inspecting the lower
end for plugs is first, if it is clean, then you can go to the diaphragm and
see if it is in good condition, any cracks means it is no good. Next check
out the electrical end and using anything that will remove metal will only
open the gap between the points and should be done only as a last resort.
Most electrical shops will carry contact cleaner which will do the job the
best. Use a strip of cloth with contact cleaner on it moving it back and
forth while holding the points together will make them look like new again.
Watch all the soldered wires and be prepared to re solder them if necessary.
I like to follow one simple rule when taking something like the fuel pump
apart, lay it out as it came apart and then just reverse the procedure.
Let us know how it came out and if it is a mess, but the plastic bottom
is still in good condition I may have an upper end that will work. Also,
a Sedan pump has a smaller lower end than a Coupe pump.

Thanks for your and the other reply's about the pump. Tne electric
motor on the pump is siezed and will not turn, but with great
difficulty. I have put penatrating oil on the outside of the bearing
and I can turn it now but with a lot of resistance. I think I need to
replace the pump with a new or used one. Thanks again for the advice.
