Well, I have owned my 600 for almost two weeks now and have put on
about 600 mile, but now I have run into a problem. I noticed that I
heard a intermittent tapping noise from the upper engine. I pulled
off the valve cover and found that the rockers and chain were rubbing
on the underside of the cover. The chain seems to have alot of slop
in it, and I was wondering if there is a tension adjustment, if so,
how and where? Let me know what I should check for, I am kind of
miss'n drive'n it already. Thanks,
Colin

Re: my first engine problem
Thanks for the help guys, let me tell you what I found so far. The
baffle on the underside of the valve cover had been broken free and
welded back into place slightly lower than in should. I had to grind
a shall area off the cover so that the rocher won't hit. I thought
this was my noise, not. I took riceburner's advive ad took out the
tensioner from the rear of the engine, the plunger was good, but the
o-rings were hard as a rock. I clean it all up and put new o-rings,
started it, and the noise was still there. The chain seems to have
nice spring tension, and I assume the the oil pressure part is
working. I don't know what the valve clearance spec is, but I an
currently adjusting (guessing) intake .05 and exhaust.07. I hope I am
close. I also noticed that one of the cam lobes had a slight bit of
abnormal wear on one edge, but I don't thing this is the cause of my
noise. I will let you know what I find. I am letting it cool for the
adjustment, then I will start is to hear the ticking about, ha. I am
running out of options. All of your input is welcome, thanks again,

Re: my first engine problem
I had a ticking noise going on in my 360 sometime ago now, and found that one pistons rings had broken and taken the top of the piston apart and threw some metal into the head.. just a mater of repalcing the piston and ring and all was fine again and it goes like a dream, an everyday runner averaging 40-45mpg.
Hope maybe this may be some help, but hopefully is is somthing les severe that is causeing the tapping or knocking.
Regards Quentin

Re: my first engine problem
I would rather not think that I could have a snapped ring. I think I
will run a compression test right now to eliminate the chance of it
being that, what should the compression spec be? I am also going to
run a heavier grade oil. Even after every thing I have done up to
this point, the sound is still there. From listening with a
stethiscope, the noise is from under the valve cover. I tried to take
the oil cap off for a better listen, but I ended up getting a bath.
Thanks,
Colin (learning to type slower)
