Rotating a motor backwards

Hi All, I acquired an N360 and it hadnt been run at all for many years and to free it up and putting all new oil in etc we attempting to rotate the motor forward and back. It seems rotating it backwards has allowed it to skip teeth. So now the only issue is, what now? Can I line up the head, hold it tight then keep rotating the crank backwards skipping teeth on the tensioner until the crank is lined up? Or do I remove the head, somehow find a new headgasket and time it up from there?
2nd quesiton, Haven't taken mine apart, but whats the head gasket made from, is it a reusable one?

Remove the right and left cam bearings.  Set the crank at TDC.  Set the cam at TDC (tight on the front side, the tensioner will take up the slack on the back side).  (Check the manual for timing marks on the camshaft).    Install the cam bearings and check the valve clearances&. if they are close to spec you are OK.  If one or more are  really loose, you may have bent the valves&. ouch.
The head gasket should be replaced, but you might reuse it for a brief test& a very brief test as it may leak both oil and compression.  Good Luck Sent from Windows Mail From:
